How to Clean and Care for Titanium Cookware

The correct way to clean titanium cookware depends on what the word titanium describes. Bare or patterned titanium, titanium-enhanced stainless steel and titanium-reinforced coatings should not automatically receive the same treatment.

For coating-free patterned titanium

1. Let the pan cool enough to avoid thermal shock.
2. Wash with warm water, dish soap and a non-scratching sponge.
3. For stuck food, soak briefly or simmer water to loosen residue rather than attacking a hot, dry pan.
4. Dry the pan before storage.
5. If the manufacturer recommends periodic oiling or seasoning, follow its stated method.

For titanium-enhanced stainless steel

Hestan says NanoBond is dishwasher safe while noting that high heat and oil residue can produce temporary discoloration. Stainless-compatible cleaners may be appropriate, but use only products permitted by the manufacturer and test an inconspicuous area first.

For titanium-reinforced coatings

Treat these as coated pans. Use soft utensils and nonabrasive cleaning unless the manufacturer explicitly states otherwise. Once an applied coating blisters, peels or delaminates, replacement is more appropriate than aggressive resurfacing.

Avoid these common mistakes

• Plunging a very hot pan into cold water
• Using oven cleaner or harsh chemicals not approved for cookware
• Assuming “metal utensil safe” also means steel wool is appropriate
• Heating an empty pan on maximum power for extended periods
• Ignoring a loose handle, warped base or separating layer
